The weapon you hold vs enemies

It had been a while since I had done a Deep run so I went in with my Bip. At 2 parts of the Deep, everyone was told to unequip their staves and wands so that the enemies don't attack you.
Since when do the enemies attack you because you are holding a staff instead of a sword? If this is the case, why aren't all casters holding just off hand items so that they are never attacked or all casters holding a sword so that they are less likely attacked?site is http://www.innicc.com if you need it.
