Learn2mage: A guide to mage talent builds. Can't Post

It seems to me that there's a lot of newbie mages running around these forums, so I thought I'd compile a small list of talent build combinations. lol wizardry

Arcane Trees

Fire variants
40/21 PoM Pyro (PvP)
Pros: Big, big numbers. FREE spell damage based on your intellect. FREE 10% intellect increase. Enhances spell damage, and uses fire for even more damage...
Cons: ...once every three minutes. Low survivability.

40/21 PoM Pyro (PvE)
Pros: Awesome for raids. Not too high as far as threat goes, as long as you can manage yourself. Sustained DPS if you have a Shadow Priest or two in your group. This is the build I use in raids.
Cons: Could be more mana efficient.

33/28 PoM Pyro (PvE/PvP)
Pros: Versatile build in PvE and PvP. Has Blazing Speed for PvP.
Cons: Works for both PvE and PvP but isn't as good as specific 40/21 versions for either. No Mind Mastery. Not mana efficient in the least.

Frost variants
40/21 PoM FB (PvP)
Pros: Using Frost Nova and then firing off an AP PoM FB is almost a guaranteed crit. Has ice block which is very important for arenas.
Cons: Survivability in arenas. No Ice Barrier.

31/30 PoM FB (PvP/PvE)
Pros: Additional frost enhancing talents. Slightly more survivability than 40/21.
Cons: Less spell damage. Still no Ice Barrier.

Deep Fire Trees

1/57/3 (PvP/PvE)
Pros: Fire, fire, fire. Lots of crits, fast kills. Works in PvE and PvP.
Cons: Nobody uses it. Not as good as 10/48/3 for PvE. Survivability? Pfft, who needs it.

10/48/3 (PvE)
Pros: The raid build to end all raid builds. The DPS doesn't get any better than this. Low threat, sustained DPS, awesome when grouped with a Shadow Priest.
Cons: excuse me wtf is pvp lol?

Deep Frost Trees

17/0/44 (PvE/PvP)
Pros: Best of the world of Frost. Best mage survivability, the best Arena build. Standard Frost.
Cons: Frost ain't for raiding, champ. Fire or arcane/fire will always be higher DPS.

0/17/44 (PvP)
Pros: Basically, the 17 points in Fire is for enhancing Fire Blast. Not too much different from 17/0/44.
Cons: No Imp. CS or Clearcasting.

61
(PvE/PvP)
Pros: Everything Frost.
Cons: What's the friggin' POINT?

Well, let's see...

High damage for low mana cost. With Frost's damage+crit increases and mana cost reduction, you can do the most damage with the least amount of mana used.

FREE pet! Yeah, he's only there for 45 seconds every 3 minutes, but that's like, adding an extra Frost Nova and another 150 DPS, roughly. He's also there to soak up damage to a small extent in the worst case scenario.

Limited Invulnerability. For about 300 mana, you can soak up a little over 1k damage. Too bad it doesn't shake off side effects, like slowdown, stun, etc.

Not many people have frost protection. The only people with inherit frost protection are Dwarves. Blood Elves have universal MR, but to a very small extent that really doesn't matter much at level 70.

Double crit damage! Enough said on that...

Lovely side effects: Not only do you do damage, but you'll slow them down quite a bit and can even stop them cold (no pun intended) until the next hit (or until your target uses a root-away effect), which will probably deal double damage due to a +50% chance of critting.

Ice Armor takes frost effects. That means that they'll be slowed considerably and even has a chance of being rooted when they hit at you.

My pen broke...

WRITTEN IN PENCIL!
You can be handy in raids and instances - I've done this. DPS ain't too high, but that's okay, since you don't wanna outaggro the tanks.

I mean, what's the point of using it over 17/0/44.

Nobody ever gave me a chance, really. Done most of the instances as a frost mage, though.

Of course. I think anyone knows that. However, I did down a few world bosses with an all frost spec in Kel'Thuzad.
(With a raid, of course)

Did I say it wasn't good pre-BC? No. That wasn't the point of this whole discussion to begin with. I specifically asked about BC. I raided before BC was released, I know Frost was already useful. Pre-BC was irrelevant to the discussion.

Stop being stupid.

Pre-BC was irrelevant to the discussion.

How the crap does this make sense considering the fact that it was what she was discussing and she was the one who brought it up. It doesn't always have to be about you.
