Computer refuses to read disks Can't Post

I bought a new computer a few months ago, and everything worked find at the start. I rarely use my CD drive, so I didn't notice this until it was too late to return it.

My computer refuses to read any form of CD, and now, any form of disk, such as a memory stick.

It runs smooth, fast, theres no problems with it.

With removable disks, it shows that there is one attached, but I'll click the icon and it will bring up a popup saying "Insert disk". Than lag out, and freeze whatever file I used to open it with. If I used firefox to save something into it, it will freeze firefox, if I use my computer, my computer will freeze.

It doesn't do this with CDs, its almost not even aware that a CD is there. You can hear it reading the CD, but it never loads it.

Anyone know what could be wrong? Possibly a corrupt driver?

or replace your optical drives, while also buying a new computer can be expensive just buying the tower power mobo and pro can be cheap and you can just move all your ol components (hard drive ram GFX) to the new mobo and that fixes things, that's what im going to do in a year or so.

Have you used the "update driver automatically" function? It once created a bit of havoc on my old pc that had a onboard graphics card. Try reinstalling the driver before you do anything else. Try to download the driver from the CD drive manufacturer directly so that you can be sure it's the right one.

A reformat of your hard drive is a waste of time and data if you haven't tried simpler solutions yet. And the rich kid fix is a ridiculous idea. Waste of money to replace a part because of a likely software bug.
