Flash drive just suffered the horrors of the spin cycle Can't Post

I've been looking for this cheap flash drive for WEEKS and I find it in the dryer this evening. Quite obviously I plug it into the nearest PC, cheerily expecting it to spring to life and give me my bountiful text files. ALAS. I get all the mandatory "this drive is installed and ready to use" messages from the taskbar, and it shows up in My Computer with a drive letter and everything, but double-clicking on it yields "Please insert a disk into Drive G:"

Damn. Well the first thing I do is boot up one of the greatest programs ever, Drive Rescue, and see what I can do with it. This program worked wonders when I got a "this drive is not formatted" message with the same device. Too bad it's not even in the list of detected drives. I can see it in Disk Management in the Administrative Tools; it's listed as "Disk 1" and removable, but says "No Media" under that. I can't format it either, once again it says no media. TestDisk, another fairly awesome program, failed to detect it, and I don't feel like installing the trial version of Undelete because I'll probably get the same thing.

Is there any way to get the data off this thing?

I have a solution but it would require you to get your hands on ten gallons of maple syrup and a backhoe.

I have [Expletive Deleted]ed over many a flash drive and can tell you from experience that you are halfway to screwed. If you got it out of the dryer, then you are nearly done. It's not the washer that screws it up, it's the heat from the dryer. If you are unable to normally format from the MY Computer Menu, then there is no way to rescue the drive, or even you text files.

bye.

Yeah, I've pretty much given up on it, but the files I can live without. I'll just have to retype them again.

*drops drive in bin*

*picks up 10GB external drive that is impossible to lose*

Hello, secondary wallet.

I just stuffed this thing with Damn Small Linux 3.4 with Qemu, the PortableApps menu including Audacity (and a bunch of playlists I'm editing to burn to CD), Abiword, Notepad++, Foobar2000, VLC, MagicISO, Firefox with a million extensions, Toucan, Pidgin, Sumatra, GIMP, Mac OS System 6 in vMac, and soon, OpenOffice. I'm also currently installing Project64 on it, and when that's done I'll throw Mario Kart 64 and Paper Mario on for some not-at-home awesomeness. Oh and I made a backup of the entire root directory to my internal 160GB drive, just in case anything happens.

EDIT: I seem to remember last year at school, I had ePSXe running on this thing with the .isos for FF7, plus the demos for Unreal Tournament and Halo that I'd just drop off at a bunch of PCs and then have network GAMES while the teacher wasn't looking. Fun.

I haven't even filled up a gig yet on this thing.

viva la usb

Mix a pancake,
Stir a pancake,
Pop it in the pan;
Fry the pancake;
Toss the pancake,
Catch it if you can.
