LimeWire Help Can't Post

I'm really not sure if this is the right forum, or if this is allowed at all, but I just a few questions on LimeWire.

I'm going to download a 'bit of music on it, but I don't know if the music files will have viruses and such on it. So, has anyone downloaded a virus or keylogger through LimeWire? Or does LimeWire automatically detect this stuff. (Which I hightly doubt.)

DON'T FLAME PLEASE!

Re: [duler700] LimeWire Help [In reply to] Can't Post

The catch-all solution is to, y'know, go buy the music and risk a lot less.

Alternatively, all you can really do is look at song file size. A minute is about a megabye (1,024KB), and most songs will be in the 3096KB-4500KB range. Smaller or (significantly) larger, they're probably infected.

I've not been infected since I've been using Limewire. Still haven't. And that's saying a lot, because I download an average of twenty songs a day.

And never download compressed files of whole albums and such.

If you're gonna download complete albums, Torrent them.

And then there was silence.

And even if you're not going to download complete albums, just get the torrent for the album and then check which files you want to download.

Remember that a 4 minute song is about 5mb.

Look for .mp3 files usually.

Alright, thanks for the tips everyone. Oh also, what does "Torrent" mean? :P

EDIT: One more question... how am I supposed to see if the file is compressed or not?

Re: [duler700] LimeWire Help [In reply to] Can't Post

Compressed files will be in formats such as .zips or .rars, and pretty much guarantees you a virus.

Torrenting is a another way to share files, and relies on other people to download from. A .torrent file will get you access to these 'swarms' of people and download the file, kept track of by 'trackers'. Trackers keep tabs on live torrents. People have to 'seed' a torrent to first put it out there in a swarm and trackers host the .torrent file, and then other people can download and seed. The smaller teh swarm the slower the download. No seeders, no download.

People use torrents in programs like BitComet, Azureus, and uTorrent.

Okay, sorry if I'm annoying any of you. But, I have just one more question!

What would be a good torrent sharing site or program? Would it be better than Limewire?

Re: [duler700] LimeWire Help [In reply to] Can't Post

I use Limewire for my music, because I don't trust it for anything else, and it has poor file selection. I use uTorrent + www.torrent-finder.com to get anything else that tickles my fancy, because of the prospectively high download speeds and larger file choice for my bigger files. Limewire has a more intuitive interface, and I find it easier to download and organize large amounts of files in there (music).

Okay, well is that torrent site good for movies? Because so far it hasn't come up with any choices for School of Rock. Except porno. :

If they're music files open them in something other than Windows Media Player.

LimeWire is not decent when it comes to finding audio and music because it's a haven for faux songs and other garbage. So use Soulseek.

Ignore the filesize if you see "lossless" in the filename.

Don't use Limewire if you don't want a virus. Any song can have a virus, even if it is ".mp3" or the right "size" for a music file. You can't prevent downloading a virus unless you just don't download anything for FREE that's like Limewire. For all anyone knows the acrade GAMES from this site could have a virus on 'em, no one knows.Frown

Eh, .MP3 files can't contain virii. Ever. You can't get a virus from just visiting a website with an iota of security on your computer.

Actually Peach, you, uh, can.

True that on MP3 files though. The only possible way it could ever hold a virus is if you renamed a .exe file to .mp3. Lawl.

And even then you would have to actually execute the file, just attempting to play it would do little.

I usually just get the torrent and block all of the files except the ones I want. If you can find good torrents then it is usually a much more reliable way to download when compared to p2p programs such as limewire.

Yeah, if someone finds a torrent with malware in it they usually stop seeding it and post about it on the tracker's website.

There are some mp3s that have stuff in the id tags that [Expletive Deleted] up ipods (intentionally) and force you to reformat them, not a big deal, but still a pain
