Might be Switching from Windows to Linux Can't Post

But first I want to know some things.

  1. Why Linux is better?
  2. Can I still run everything like I did on windows?
  3. Is it faster? What else can it do besides windows?
  4. Anything else.

I need serious answers and such. Please.

  • You'll find that a lot of the stuff on Windows that you ran either has a Linux equivalent or is something so stupid that you could probably live without it anyway.

  • Linux, if configured correctly, can do everything Windows does. Lord knows why anybody would WANT it to though. eply]

Fast enough to where it can be run on a 333MHz iMac G3 with 256MB of RAM at a decent speed. And that's the latest version of SUSE I'm running.

Sounds Excellent, would I have to reinstall all of my things? Wait - Stupid question; I'm pretty sure I would have to.

Yeah. Linux doesn't run EXE files (Windows applications natively), though there are many viable, FREE, and all around better alternatives.

Take a look here for more info.

I hereby state that all ignore this post.

    *clears throat*

Along with the decision to use Linux, there also comes the choice of what distro to use. As you may know, there are hundreds. DistroWatch is a good place to keep track of them as far as updates. People are going to come into this thread and be all "NONONO U HAS TO USE THIS DISTRO IT RULES LOLOL!!1" Who cares? They all spring from the One Kernel.

    Why Linux is better?

If you don't know this why are you considering switching?

Linux has a lot of power and choices; one of the reasons for hating Windows is the fact that you have so few choices, but some people get annoyed that they need to make so many choices to do things on Linux. If you get everything set up the way you like it, you'll be happy for as long as you use it, without having to worry about something blowing up.

If you play GAMES a lot, always keep a copy of Windows just for GAMES. There are hacks and workarounds for getting just about any Windows game working on Linux, but it really isn't worth it especially if you already have Windows.

If you want to try it, look up all your hardware on a HCL to see how good it will work, then pick which one to download, put it on a CD, and install it on a new hard drive.

Whatever you do, don't use Vista.

You would consider buying it? Just download the beta and use the bios clock bug.

Yes I know. I'm not even going to consider buying it -- Dammit, Why the [Expletive Deleted] would I do that?

I'll repeat; that was bad wording. It would come out as:
