If the second monitor doesn't show anything maybe you have to select it. You can actually do that without seeing what you're doing, by using the keyboard instead of the mouse. Turn on the computer and wait until you think it's finished starting up. The first thing you're supposed to do is right-click the desktop to make the menu come up. But there's a button that does it for you.
It's the one to the right of AltGr. First hold down the Windows key and press D to make sure the desktop is showing. If you don't have a menu key, just right-click and hope that you hit the desktop instead of an icon. Next, press R. That should bring up Properties. Then press Ctrl+Tab 4 times and you should be on the Settings tab. On that there's a drop-down menu for selecting a monitor. Alt+D selects the menu. Press the down arrow to select the second option in the menu, then press Alt+E to select the "extend my desktop" checkbox, then Alt+A to press the Apply button. Using a mouse is for squares.
