OK you're confused and I'm so confused.

hotlink means direct link. Like something like this: . Hotlinking does not just do for pictures, it also does with media, music, etc. Like direct link. Be careful, some hosts do NOT allow hotlinking.
If you're talking about Markup, go to what CoolGreen said.
If you're talking about HTML, here's something you might wanna consider this code:

would turn up as:

to hotlink via de-coding variables, you must put the source code into the <> while adding direct links.
