Bringing back the draft Can't Post

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/....ap/index.html

I'm not sure how Democrats voted in the last bill for bringing back the draft but I wonder if things could change having the Democrats in power? To me, I think it would be very hypocritical for the Democrats to try and bring back the draft and put more lifes in harms way when they put down Republicans so much this past election because of the deaths in Iraq.
I can't see some of this ideas passing. An 18-42 type of service for men and women. I would not have a problem doing some type of community service that somehow helps the country out in a time of war. Whether it be working at places that need people to help aid the war effort. But as far as actually going in combat through a draft. The only way I would do that is if I actually heard testimonies of people coming from rich families already serving through a draft. I will not go over seas and risk my life and body parts when the rich kids get a FREE pass again like they did during Vietnam. My dad was drafted back in the 1960's and he basically came from a poor family while all the rich kids he grew up with didn't have to serve because they were able to stay in college.

There has already been interviews with most of the democrats, the ones I've seen just bluntly say "No." to bringing back the draft.
It isn't going to happen.

If the draft is reinstated, I'm ditching my american citizenship and becoming swiss. The swiss army also has a draft, but I would never actually see any combat, so...duh.

And then there was silence.

You all act like compulsory military service is a bad thing.

Just enlist/commission before the draft is reinstated. Tongue

No, if you just wanna be safe and see no action then go to the Air Force. Not pilot, you probably won't qualify anyway, but for every pilot there are at least 50 more people working the pit, then there're the countless number of people in the towers and operating radar.

If the draft was brought back, first off I doubt congress would allow it, there would be riots from American people, and Canada's population would definitely grow.

Reinstating the draft may sound like a bad idea at first, until you consider a few things.

Iraq - With more and more casualties mounting up overseas in Iraq, it is nearly impossible for the military to meet its monthly recruiting quota. Without sufficient military personel, other nations could take advantage of the situation, which entirely cause more violence.

North Korea - Something WILL happen in the next 20 years, whether it be peace in the Koreas or all out war. Either way it is important for us, as the "peacekeepers" at the 38th parrallel, to have as many soldiers as needed in case something happens.

I will be more in-depth when I finish up some work.

You don't get much action in the Air Force unless you're a pilot. All the pit crews and techs do all day is sit in the lounge watching sports when they're not tinkering with their planes or sneaking off to play poker.

I loled so hard at that.

FYI, there are barely any US fortifications along the border anymore, the major fortifications are either in the middle of the country(Kunsan Air Base) or all the way down at the tip of the peninsular(Warrior Country) the base here in Seoul is a joke... And we have a mandatory military service and a substantial force, however the thing keeping us from being able to build a force strong enough to protect ourselves ourselves is that goddamn treaty.

All the soldiers do here is drink beer, get drunk, get laid(you should see the whore houses that never get caught in the military districts). Then there's the occasional rape and/or pillaging when they wander out of town.

The US forces are nothing but a hindrance. They give the impression they're the Guardians and even get PAID for it, however they cower behind our own defenses and huddle near evacuation routes.

Oh, and for the record? The new Korean president FINALLY had some sense beaten into him(That happens after you've been impeached) and they're pushing the majority of the US forces out of the country.

I loled at that pretty hard too.

Stop posing, it's obvious that you know nothing. Reunification in the next 20 years is NOT a possibility(ESPECIALLY after that missile and nuke gig). Nor is "all out war". At their current state North Korea would run out of all resources and supplies 2 weeks into any possible war. However if KJI wants to commit suicide and attack anyway annihilating his own country and taking a substantial portion of South Korea with it there's no stopping him, he has 2000 artillery units with Seoul in range(notice how the US military base here in Seoul is right behind Dragon Hill, protecting them from artillery bombardment?).

Then you saw a very small fraction of an Airbase. 'Cause I can guarantee you from my own experience with the USAF that there's a lot more than that going on. Maybe the pit crews and techs jack off in their spare time with cards or TV, but there are a lot of other jobs as well. Granted not all AF personnel are "HUA AIRFORCEEEEEEEEEEE" types (although we do have those, i.e. the PJs, Security Forces, TACP teams, etc) but if you're looking for a prevalence of that kind of personality then go check out the Marines or Army.

I'm not talking about action in terms of firefights, massive land battles or air engagements, etc. I'm talking about other opportunities for Airmen besides working on planes or flying them.

I wasn't talking about action as in combat. I was talking about any action in general. The lack of action at all gets to the point that the weekly-or-so drills get exciting.

The only excitement you'll ever get is flying the border, the occasional bomb in the hangar that somehow gets armed and the occasional bogie on radar.

There really isn't much else people do in the Air Force other than work on planes, fly them and man radar. Perhaps maybe if you've graduated from Command School and you're in the Logistics department where you have to work with numbers and semantics all day, but personally I would find that even more dreary.

Oh, I see. You're thinking of some of the generic less exciting enlisted jobs (and after a quick peek at the AF website I can see where you're coming from a little - some enlisted jobs look mindbogglingly boring), and I'm looking at this from an officer's perspective.

Bitch.

So you graduated from some rich-bitch military academy? I hated those faggots back in Basic.

If being a GMC in AFROTC at a CSU is being at a rich-bitch military academy then that is impressive. I'm getting more bang for my buck than I thought. Mind, I could have gotten in to the AF Academy but I elected not to - as I stated in the other thread "Hey" (by Shinysheep) I'm not one of those "HUA AIRFORCEEEEEEEEEE" people, which is what you need to be if you want to survive the Zoo.

And (although it would be fun to propagate the notion to the contrary) integrity compels me to clear up what seems to be a misunderstanding - I have not yet been commissioned.
