cartoons are changing, they're not getting worse (methinks). we're seeing a lot more quantity over quality, ESPECIALLY when japanese anime is concerned. i've gotten sick of that [Expletive Deleted]. its nothing but keyframes and cracked out artwork. not pleasing to the eye anymore. on the other hand we have stuff like Titan AE (amazing animation and for the most part appropriate use of CGI), Spirited Away(high tier Japanese animation), the odd disney movie that isnt cgi, there's a ton, the [Expletive Deleted]ty ones (anime) are the ones people pay attention to, thats why it seems to suck.
as far as TV is concerned we've had some pretty cool stuff recently, Invader Zim comes to mind, Samurai Jack and Powerpuff girls were pretty cool from a stylistic standpoint..story wise they got boring really fast since they're basically for dumb kids (and or people like me) with zero attention span. spongebob is still funny. no really. sit down and watch spongebob. it's [Expletive Deleted]ing funny. if you don't beleive me take one of these *HANDS BONG*, and you'll be good.
we need less CGI. there have been awesome ones like Kung Fu Panda and Horton Hears a Who (basically 86 minutes of 420 eye candy) but now when i see trailers for these at theaters i'm more worried about whats going on on the screen my nintendo DS than whatever new inane pixar borefest with a vapidly simplistic, ikea-esque name is going to rot the brains of poor children next fall IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE.
for a while i watched/bought/downloaded damn near every decent series on Adult Swim, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021, The Bookdocks (decent framerate and use of keyframes for an anime!), Metalocalypse, Squidbillies, almost everything they aired was hilarious, none of the shows were especially noteworthy in the animation department, hell, Birdman, ATFH, PFH and Brak were made in FLASH. they seem to be going a bit downhill now, i mean, there's that one about the dumb christians, the happiest gay couple (which is decent)...hmm..maybe they need to give Jhonen Vasquez or someone a contract and just let 'em go crazy. i would like to see him do a show not semi-targeted at kids where he could profuesly divulge into the vulgarity and...weirdness we saw in JTHM and Squee and not have a side character screaming about WAFFLES every thirty seconds (or maybe, i thought gir was an interesting contrast)
