Is the First Ammendment Kept Sacred in America? Can't Post

FREEdom fo Religion and FREEdom of Speech.

A student was suspended for wearing an eyepatch to school, in North Carolina, despite the fact that it was religious gear.

FREEdom of religion does not apply to schools, or so i have been told by the Texas government, they claim when i begin going to a school i agree to that schools rules, no matter how unjust the rules are. They do not care if you "have to go to school" or if its no tin your budget to leave that school. The school board has the right to act in anyway it seems appropriate, because it is elected by Parents...

So it is not, because i still had to cut my hair...

I wore an eyepatch to school once. The teachers were like, "I can't believe they haven't already put that in the dress code." Month later, we weren't allowed to do so anymore. lol.

The question is how does a religion obtain legitimacy?Since it's a FREE country therefore you have the right to believe in whatever you want..

If you actually know anything about the laws of the United States, you'd know that in Public places you are not allowed to undergo religious practice. Church is not a public place per say so it does not apply to it.

It was an immature joke and he knew it - he's just playing with the system. He also called it "FREEdom of expression". But the fact is he wore an eyepatch and brought an inflatable sword to school, and everybody was probably staring and/or laughing at him. I mean come on, even if he was serious, this has nothing to do with the law. People have FREEdom to express themselves by singing too. That doesn't mean you can start singing in the middle of class and refuse to shut up after being warned four times.

Yeagh, but, he can claim that it's religious gear. yeah, pastafarianism laughs at itself. Finally, a lighthearted religion. Anyways, wearing an eyepatch is no different from wearing a cross, it's part of his religious beliefs.

I dont have a problem with people wearing religious things in school, but the whole pastafarian thing is a joke. While i agree with why the guy made the FSM site, its kinda stupid to actually parade around in the stuff and claim its your religion. That's like a black guy saying nigger all the time in class just to make a white guy get in trouble when he says it. Religion sucks. Atheist ftw

Exactly. "It was an immature joke and he knew it - he's just playing with the system." And he didn't just bring an eyepatch. Did you read the article? He was carrying around a freaking inflatable sword. His beliefs weren't real, and even if they were it wouldn't make a difference. Regardless of how valid a belief is you can't wear the "gear" for it in school if it's distracting. That's basic reasoning. I can't believe this is supposed to be a serious debate.

If you want it to be an actual debate, at least edit the first post so it's not just about some stupid kid.
This belongs in humor and jokes, although it's not even remotely funny.

He's right here though. If he wishes to believe in this religion, then he shouldn't be told to move it unless it was a clear disruption. That's hard to prove.

A judge in one case where students wore armbands to protest the Vietnam war said that students don't lose their constitutional rights when they enter their school gates. This counts.

If the school says it respects religious beliefs, than this student shouldn't of been suspended. It doesn't matter that the religion isn't 'normal' or widely believed, it's a religion. Anyone who claims it's not is wanting us to enter a very slippery slope: What exactly makes a religion? Then you start to get with discrimination of religions that seem valid, since you obviously can't get all aspects of religion into something like this.

The kid kind of wimped out on us, though: He didn't wear the eyepatch when he got back to school. Lame. He should wear it anyway, if he really wanted to persue this, which basically means he doesn't.

Eyepatches are no more a disruption than when we started bring retarded kids into normal classes. One of them got really bad mood swings, and would literally throw chairs at people. But since the state was wanting us to put mentally deficient kids in these classes, the school's hands were tied. This is obviously a lot less - a few chuckles at the beginning of class, and occasional pirate joke - but beyond that, it's fine.

But you have to draw the line somewhere, or eventually people will be able to get around any dress code by screaming religion. The fact that he didn't wear it back should say he doesn't actually take it very seriously.

You're just rambling about religion, but all your points are meaningless, especially considering the high likelihood that he wasn't even serious. As you pointed out yourself, he didn't wear it back.

This sentence starts with "IF" and ends with "That's hard to prove." True, although you were referring to whether it caused a disruption - but you're wrong. What's hard to prove is whether he was serious in the first place. It's much easier to come to the conclusion that he wasn't, and he was drawing attention to himself on purpose. How exactly would it be hard to prove that he was causing a disruption? It's not hard to tell when kids are distracted. And for the third time, he was dragging an inflatable sword around everywhere, not just wearing an eyepatch. Why do you say it was just "a few chuckles at the beginning of class"? Hmm? Were you there?
