The LHC = end of the world? What are your thoughts? Can't Post

OK so many of you may know of the experiment with the LHC (large Hadron Collider) to find out more about fusion technology, and to find higgs boson.
If you dont, this is what the experiment is about in a nutshell: (My knowledge on this is limited). They will use a particle accelerator (the largest and most powerful) to accelerate two proton beams in opposite directions, they will collide at 99.9% the speed of light, and the collision will recreate the time just after The Big Bang, and evidently, create a microscopic black hole.

There are two groups of scientists are debating what this microscopic black hole will do (These are based on pure theories).
One group, that is against the idea, predicts that when the black hole is created, it will continue to expand as it sucks more things in, and by 50 months, it will be large enough to suck in the entire Earth, destroying everything.

Coincidentally, 50 months from today is December 2012. The same date that they mayan calendar ends, and the same date that Nostradamus predicted the world would end. Heres a quote from Nostradamus: "All should leave Geneva, Saturn turns from gold to iron, the contrary positive ray will exterminate everything, there will be signs in the sky before this". Yes, the LHC is located on the France/Switzerland border, near geneva. Saturn turning from gold to iron may be talking about fusing two elements to create a different one, and the positive ray is obviously the proton beams. Anyway I wont get into prophecies and oracles now.

The other group of scientists, that are supporting the idea, are predicting that based on Stephen Hawking's theory that black holes are continually deteriorating, that a microscopic black hole will have no effect and will evaporate immediately after being created.

The experiment will still go forth, this experiment will either the eventual destruction of the Earth, or a breakthrough in fusion technology, which could make cold fusion possible. This means no more petrol/electricity/power generators, energy will be renewable and virtually unlimited (fusion energy is the same source of energy that the sun uses)
My opinion: The black hole will do nothing and there will probably be a scientific breakthrough.

If you think some of the above facts are wrong, feel FREE to correct me.

Discuss.

Well, it happened an hour ago and I'm still alive. Big surprise there.

The thing is, if there actually was a fraction of a chance that the experiment would cause the destruction of the earth, they wouldn't even go on with it.

Probably.

there are not "two groups debating", there's just a handful of whackjobs that no credible scientist takes seriously, but as always, bad news gets more publicity.

and there is no reason at all to care what the mayans said.

They're only in the acceleration phase. It'll take a couple months for the protons to be moving fast enough for the experiment.

And then there was silence.

Yeah and then after that (if a black hole were to be produced) it would take 50 months for it to be big enough to "swallow the Earth"

there already is a fraction of a chance

that fraction just happens to be so small that nobody cares

theres a fraction of a chance that me posting this will, in some way, lead to the destruction of the universe

If you know anything about science this cant happen. The particles do not have enough energy to form a black hole, but if it some how happens it wont be able to hold together. They just want to find the higgs particle.

So you post two of the most popular physical equations and with no explanation whatsoever expect us to believe that they prove that two atoms smashing into each other will give us a black hole that will consume the Earth.

I can't believe I ever doubted you.

Why must this be overlooked?

Of course I dont think two atoms smashing into each other will cause a black hole that will consume the Earth. I have a brain. Its just the fact that he underestimates how much energy they would actually release.

EDIT: Cant be bothered going into detail with the equations, but they are pretty much self explanatory.

EDIT2: Looking over it again I dont think the energy would be high enough to create a black hole. In fact, black holes are purely theoretical, you cannot measure how much energy would even be needed to create one. Anything said about black holes (even that one would be created from this machine) are purely theoretical, even their existance is theoretical let alone their behavior.

Lets venture that shall we?

stop talking like that it doesn't suit you

look none of us have any idea what we're talking about and neither do the nuts who are challenging this collider thing - you aren't going to find any material to support that side from a credible source let alone a hypothesis that even sounds plausible to anyone with half (or greater than half) a brain, also mayans are useless

therefore,

this "debate" is over
