Was the atomic bombs droped on Japan a bit....much? Can't Post

They would have lost anyway, but WWII was a brutal war, and the Japanese weren't surrendering. Then again, we had all the allies on them after the defeat of Germany, so it's hard to decide...

Saved a lot of allied lives though.

It worked, didn't it? That's what matters. Could you have thought of any other way to make 'dem commie Japs t'surrender?

Could have done it the old fashion way. *D day pops into head.* But perhaps this was best.

You do realize that if we did a D-Day style thing, we'd have done it millions of times, since Japan is like... what? a few thousand islands?

You wouldn't need to hit a large fraction of that to make the country drop out of a war.

Hiroshima (or Nagasaki, forgot which was second) was overkill, but I don't totally disagree with it.

You guys dont understand.
The Japanese were people of honor.
Honor was more important to them to their lives, family, or anything else.
When the first bomb was dropped, they didnt surrender.
So we dropped another.

Re: [coolgreencat] Was the atomic bombs droped on Japan a bit....much? [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually no.

If the Manhattan Project had not come through on schedule then operation Downfall(also known as "X-Day") was to be initiated. Operation X-Day included massive naval bombardments supplemented by aerial incendiary bomb strikes. The casualties from those two alone were projected at over half a million. After this brutal bombardment which would've taken out most of the shore-line defenses, a D-Day style Beachhead landing was to be carried out all over the island of Kyushu. Then, after establishing a firm grip on Kyushu, the Allied forces planned to climb up to the mainland and surround and bomb the hell out of Tokyo. Since the Japanese would've had more time to mobilize the ensuing battle would've been the bloodiest battle in the war. In terms of casualties this would have been even more devastating than the atomic bombs as basically every city on those two islands would've been obliterated. Total projected casualties for the Japanese numbered between 5 to 10 million and American casualties were a whopping 4 million.

So no, the atomic bombs were a godsend for both sides.

btw, the combined casualties from both bombs were less than 300,000. A relatively low number compared to the projected casualties of Operation Downfall.

Considering how many Naval bases Japan had... I think you would.

It wasn't "a bit much", there's never too much in warfare.

So you're saying that the Holocaust wasn't a "bit much" at all?

Also- They dropped it to stop the russians.

Had they invaded, the russians would have invaded the northern islands. America didn't want the commies getting a claim to some of japan as well. Their sphere of influence was too large as it was, in their opinion.

The holocaust wasn't a war, it was a massacre.
The war was on the frontline. Where there are no limits.

Yes, it was a massacre, however it was also an act of war.

Then you wouldn't disagree when I say the Geneva convention on cruel weapons should be disbanded?

The holocaust was racial purification. The Aryans were simply removing the taint of the kin of Karl. It was not an act of war or a massacre.

I think it was needed, but Japan surrendered before the second one was dropped. The second bomb was unneccisary.

The Japanese were surrendering - they said they would surrender but they wanted to keep their current emperor as a leader. The U.S. wanted unconditional surrender, so we nuked them instead. The emperor remained in power anyway.
