Do you find that your gaming persona is more confident that your own? Are you shy around new people? Or nervous interacting in groups? Are you afraid of being judged, looking stupid or embarrassing yourself? Do you avoid meeting new people or being the centre of attention? If this sounds familiar, you may be experiencing social anxiety. Social anxiety is a form of extreme shyness, and is very common problem, affecting approximately 13% of the population (that's approximately 2.73 million Australians). People with social anxiety worry a great deal about what other people think about them, and often feel that people are thinking negatively or judgementally. They worry that they will act in an embarrassing or humiliating way. As a result of these worries, people with social anxiety often avoid social activities such as going to parties, attending meetings, giving talks, making telephone calls, being assertive and even writing, drinking or eating in front of others. Over time this can result in a restricted and unfulfilling lifestyle, including feeling lonely and isolated. They may find themselves relying on the internet and/or gaming for social interaction. If you can relate to this, the good news is that social anxiety is very treatable! I am a clinical psychologist and researcher at Macquarie University, and I'm writing this post to raise awareness about social anxiety and the treatments we provide to help people overcome it. Our clinic offers both individual and group treatments to help people develop skills and strategies to cope with their anxiety, so they are able to get out and do the things they want to do with their life. To read more about social anxiety, or to complete our anxiety self-test, visit our website: www.psy.mq.edu.au/casp/ If you have any questions about our programs, we would be happy to talk to you. Call us on 9850 8670 or email casp@psy.mq.edu.au. all the best and happy gaming Lexine PS I would appreciate any comments you have about how shyness affects your interest in and/or approach to gaming.
