I found E3 to be extremely disappointing this year. Not just as a VG writer, but as a gamer as well. I mean, 2007 was bad, but at least we got some decent news out of the event. This year we really only got 1 or 2 surprises and a small handful semi-big reveals. Nintendo's presser was a joke, Microsoft only really had two tricks up its sleeve, and Sony's biggest software announcement (not including GOW III I suppose) was a game that does not even have an official title (or affiliation with an existing series) yet. But forget all of that for a second. Everything that one needs to know about the state of the Electronic Entertainment Expo can be learned by taking a quick look at the show floor. Bringing the show back to the L.A. Convention Center made me optimistic at first, but upon seeing the 5 ROWS of booths that the floor had been scaled down to, all of my optimism faded away. Its so much less exciting than the trade show of old, and a lack of excitement leads to a lack of exposure. Less exposure means less reason for publishers to push for their big announcements to be made in July. This cycle is the result of a reinvention that was supposed to be better for the big name publishers? That worked out great. As you might be able to tell, I am fairly frustrated about all of this. I guess I get a little over-passionate about this kind of stuff, but (until 2007) E3 was always such a big deal for the Gaming Industry, and now it is next to dead. If the ESA does not make some major changes over the next year, I don't think that the show will be around much longer.
