Black Dawn Online Can't Post

Alrighty guys, I've withheld this too long. I have been working with a friend in the UK on a 2d MMORPG for quite some time. The name of the game, as the title of this post states, is Black Dawn Online.

The style can be closely related to the OLD Dransik Online and EUO. The graphics are reminiscent of our favorite oldschool game, Ultima.

The graphics in BDO are not made to impress. In fact, upon first looking at them I'm sure you'll have some negative comment. It isn't fancy images that make a game though; it's the actual gameplay.

BDO will offer many features not seen in today's prominent MMORPGS. Such features include a various list of tradeskills, even more numerous than Runescape's, player controlled ships for trade, exploration, naval warfare, and, of course, pirating!

A sample of skills that you will find are:

Brewery
Glassworking
Hunting
Spellcrafting
Summoning
Pickpocketing (Steal from players too!)
Stealth
Alchemy

...And much more!

As time goes on, many new skills, spells, classes, and areas will be added to the game to create one of the most elaborate and in-depth playing experiences you'll find for FREE on the net!

There is a major emphasis on roleplaying in this game, so as to revive the true definition of the acronym "RPG". To help encourage this, upon character creation you will be allowed to choose to become a citizen from one of four nations.

Falshire and Pinecrest create the "Good" nations, while Baalgroth and Cairn represent the "Evil" nations. Criminals, such as player killers, theives, dark lords, and dark mages will reside in the dark nations while paladins, Protectorate members (group devoted to upholding the peace ingame), and other supporters of good will reside in Falshire and Pinecrest.

Upon pledging your loyalty to a nation, you will be called by your elected king (players will be able to assume government positions!) to fight against opposing forces, whether it be another nation or a monster raid on your home town! Many events will be set up in order to assure an exciting roleplaying experience ingame.

(Players in Cairn and Pinecrest do not represent the major nations. PC and Cairn are neutral nations and are allied to no one. Players will still assume light or dark roles from these nations though.)

Most importantly though, YOU can help add on to the game! Participate in upcoming alpha tests and post your ideas on the forums! There's no guarantee we'll use them but if they are good you have just helped contribute to making an epic online game!

Visit our website at: http://www.blackdawn.34sp.com

NOTE: BDO is not online yet. It is still in the development process. Please cast your ideas on the forums though! Prepare a community that will exist in the near future and make friends with one another.

Also, testing will be closed only. This means you will need to submit an application to me and be approved for testing, too many players at once will not be good on our low speed server, so until we actually have a decent server, the closed testing stage will be active.

NOTE #2: I am Rono on the forums and website.

This sounds like Age of Empires crossed with Runescape. Good job on making it, though.

Be sure to make an extensive PvP part. Everyone loves beating the snot out of random players.

Heh... I'd like to note also that this was written entirely from scratch in VB6.0.

It is not some crappy Mirage Open Source engine. It should be semi-playable for a limited audience within a month or two.

-Edit-

PvP is one of the most important aspects of the game. If you are one of the players who likes to engage in guildwar, or even international war, you'll have fun here. I know PvP is my favorite aspect of online GAMES. However, just because it is a major focus in the game, griefers (repeat pkers) will be subject to harsh disciplinary action.

Re: [SMI] Black Dawn Online [In reply to] Can't Post

I think we'll probably have it limited to no more than 20 players on at a time for a while. We are currently running the game off of the programmers ISP, which is just a cable connection. It probably won't even be 20 until we get a stable connection and optimum network coding done.

(But the network code is already done, meaning players can walk around and talk and see each other and stuff.)

So far you can catch fish with a fishing rod and mine some ore, then you can drop the items and pick them up, and whatnot. Items were the latest things to be coded.

I can't say that all of the veterans are eligible though.. I know there are 1 or 2 that I can't stand... >.> You aren't one though, haha. But I'm still going to require that everyone sends an application. I'm going to ask Ruki to put a form on the website that mails directly to me.

-Edit- Those items are old :P Don't go by anything on the website except the screenshots and staff. It needs some updating. All of the current information exists in my head and some on the forums.

Stupid question -.-

If you were killed 50 times in a row and lost 5% of your exp towards your next level each time, with a 10% chance of losing an equipped item and a 100% chance of losing your entire inventory, unless magically protected, would you want griefers to go unpunished?

When they do it to you, I won't punish them, so don't worry.

-Edit- My point was that people won't want to play if we have power abusing assholes running around killing them continuously. BDO has a full-map PvP zone, meaning players can be attacked anywhere in the world, unless in a safe zone, such as a church or something.

Why not just have an area for fighting like rs. And only be able to attack other users there. So you have the pick of going to fight or not.

Because I said so. Black Dawn is going to have realistic concepts (not including magic and the fantasy portion). It won't be life-like, but it will be realistic. The safezones are only there for secure reasons, to prevent major atrocities from happening, such as someone standing at the spot where you will ressurect and continuously killing you.

Screenshots looks like "Demon's Winter" graphics or any other oldskool SSI game. However, since graphics don't make the whole game (Runescape is a prime example) .

I wonder how the gameplay and connection will be like?

I wouldn't mind playtesting this one out...

Oldskool GAMES this game relates to...
Graphics: Ultima II (C64)
Skillset: Eternal Dagger(Apple IIe, C64)

Do they play similar or no? Well, I guess more quesitons can be answered in your site, so let's look a little deeper than the screenies, shall we?

If you're lookin' for another playtester, lemme know!

Yar!

Yeh, its based on Classic Dransik, which was based on Ultima. Connection right now is alrighty. We are running the game on our own ISP's currently because we're cheap bastards and our funding is non-existant. The only thing that lags right now is movement. When two players move at the same time, all hell breaks loose (not really, you just get an irritating 40% walking speed decrease).

We don't intend to have too many people on at one time any time soon. Will probably put a player limit on it eventually (actually code it into the server) to avoid possible lag during alpha/beta testing. The only way this game could be accessed by 50+ players at once is if we had a real server, which won't be soon (maybe never Pirate).

But yeh, public tests will be held. Just keep in touch with me and the website/forum. I'll let you know if there is any help needed.

-Goes to play WoW-

Despite double post, I'd like to repeat here what I posted in the general forum.

I am currently searching for graphics designers who have the ability to create graphics relating to the ultima/dransik style.

This is an example of the type of designs we need done. If you believe you have any particular skill in such graphic creation, please post here or contact me via e-mail/instant messnger.
